Everybody likes a good deal — to receive good value for your money. At times, we like to get more than what we paid for. To get over on “the man” once in a while. It reminds us that there is some fairness. That the universe is looking out for you and rewarding you every so often for all your hard work and struggles.
I’ve spent a lot of time learning about travel hacks. How to find cheap airfare or how to get good pricing on hotel/resort stays. There are myriad ways to bring down the price of your vacation if you put in the time.
Today I’m going to show you how two adults can go to Mexico from the United States on less than $1000. Prices will vary depending on where in the U.S. you are coming from. I live on the east coast so that’s the information I will be working with.
Right now, getting a free Hotel/Resort Stay is very easy. In an effort to build the mailing list for Vacation Mode, I’m giving away a complimentary 5-night stay in Cancun, Mexico at Vindanta Riviera Maya. As simple as that. The retail value of these rooms is $300 per night. Sign up for the mailing list right here on this site and you get a 5-night stay in Cancun. In the spirit of transparency and giving you all the information up front, you get the room for free but you do have to pay the taxes to receive your digital certificate. You have 7 days to claim your certificate. Taxes are only $19 per night. You pay that to get your certificate. After that, you have 18 months to pick the date of your trip.
So that totals $95.
I’m not sure if you’ve ever stayed at a resort and noticed on your bill that you pay resort fees. All resorts have these fees. Resort fees in Mexico run from $11 (USD) to $20 (USD) per night paid directly to the resort when you check in. These fees cover items like WiFi internet access, local calls, resort amenities, fitness centers, in-room safes, beach chairs, umbrellas, beach/pool towels, activities and more.
Using the higher end, $20 per night is $100 for 5 nights. So far, that’s only $95 and $100 for 5 nights for your resort stay totally $195. This is just one way to find a cheap hotel stay. There are other ways such as reward cards, but, that is something I will get into at another time. Next, we need to deal with the more complicated aspect to this travel hack and that’s airfare
The key to finding cheap flights is flexibility. There are a lot of factors for getting cheap flights. The least expensive days to fly are Tuesdays and Wednesdays. I always fly to my destination on Tuesday. There can be as much as $200 to $300 difference flying out on Tuesday as opposed to Friday or Saturday. There are plenty of websites you can go to find airfare prices. I like to use Skyscanner. The first is they have a great app you can use on your smartphone, so, you have it where ever you go. The coolest feature is tracking flights. You can pick your flight dates and Skyscanner will send you updates when the price of that flight change. Believe me, the price will change. I have tracked flights to various places and I’ve seen some serious fluctuations in airfare. It really baffles me how much the price of a flight can change but this is something that you can take advantage of. You will get emails every time there's a change in price. Up or down. Below are some flights I have tracked in the past.
The first step is to figure when you’d like to fly to Cancun. The cheapest times to fly to Cancun is from December to April. I chose the month of December. Arbitrarily. The cool feature with Skyscanner, is you can do a month view and see the prices for everyday in that month.
I chose December 3rd at $165. A five-night stay takes you to the 8th. Selecting those dates, this is the results it brought me:
This is an unusual situation. You fly out of Dulles International (IAD) but return to Baltimore Washington International (BWI), both Washington DC area airports. Also, two different airlines. Going out on United and coming back on Spirit. If you are used to having someone drop you off and pick you up, leaving and arriving at different airports is not a problem. As you can see, for $10 more, you can fly out and back in to IAD.
Once you’ve decided on your flights, when you click select, it will take you to the airlines' website to purchase your tickets.
We have an airfare price set at $381. For two people, that is $760. Add the previous price of $195 from the taxes and resort fees our total is $955 for two people. $45 below $1000. This is just one example of using travel hacks to acquire an affordable vacation.
