Formerly known as different entities by the names Marriott RewardsThe Ritz-Carlton Rewards, and Starwood Preferred GuestThe Marriott International Inc. loyalty program has now been merged into a stronger, more robust and vibrant reward system. Since its merger in 2019, it has become possible and a lot faster to collect lots of points through multiple channels such as the use of Approved Credit Cards, cooperation with partners, the planning of events or even the direct purchase of points.

In contrast to other hotel programs, there is no risk of confusion between the award and elite points at Marriott Bonvoy. All points you collect are award points and can only be redeemed for rewards at Marriott. For a Marriott Elite status, however, only overnight stays are relevant.

Of course, it is possible to collect Marriott Bonvoy points for hotel stays at any of the accredited hotels. For every US dollar spent (or the equivalent in another currency) you will receive 10 Marriott Bonvoy points with a few exceptions that are clearly stated on the website where you collect 5 points for every $ 1 spent and Marriott Executive Apartments where you get 2.5 points for every $ 1. You not only collect points for the room price, but also for expenses in the hotel. This includes expenses in restaurants, spa areas, and telephone calls. Taxes and tips are, however, excluded.

Even if you don't stay in a Marriott, but visit the in-house restaurant, you can collect points for patronizing any of the accredited restaurants for your bill. The minimum amount (excluding taxes and service) is $ 10.

Members with a Marriott status are also eligible to receive bonus points for their expenses. The higher the status level, the higher the percentage bonus:

  • Silver Elite receive 10%
  • Gold Elite 25%
  • Platinum Elite 50%
  • Titanium Elite and Ambassador Elite get 75% each.

Based on the 10 point collection rate for most hotel brands, the following number of Marriott points can be collected, depending on the Marriott status:

  • Silver Elite: 10 points + 1 bonus point per USD
  • Gold Elite: 10 points + 2.5 bonus points per USD
  • Platinum Elite: 10 points + 5 bonus points per USD
  • Titanium Elite: 10 points + 7.5 bonus points per USD
  • Ambassador Elite: 10 points + 7.5 bonus points per USD

As mentioned above, points earned are irrelevant to achieving the Elite status at Marriott. Therefore, in contrast to other hotel programs, the distinction between regular or base points and bonus points only exists in theory.

Not all hotels automatically participate in the Marriott Bonvoy program. A comprehensive list of these hotels or those with limited eligibility can be found in the Program Conditions on the Marriott website.

Collect Marriott Points: Up to 3 rooms at a time

You can earn Marriott points for up to three rooms if you pay for all three rooms, shown on an invoice, and also stay in one of these three rooms. The points go to your account for all qualifying expenses of these three rooms. You can find more information on the general terms and conditions of the program on Marriott’s official website.

Marriott Bonvoy points earned expire after 24 months of inactivity. However, every new activity extends/renews the validity of all points already collected. It is therefore recommended that you collect, receive or redeem points at least once every 24 months. Expired points cannot be restored.

Please note that you will not be entitled to receive Marriott points when you booking through a third party...

As is the case with most hotel programs, you cannot collect points with Marriott Bonvoy if you book your stay through third-party providers (unaccredited online travel agencies, tour operators) or special discounted prices (crew tariffs, employee tariffs). Group tariffs for events and conferences are also ruled out.

You will only receive points if you book the official Marriott rates via the official Marriott channels (website, app or over the phone), directly in any of its approved hotels or through approved travel agencies. You will find more details on the terms and conditions page Marriott’s official website.

In principle, booking via the Marriott website should be the cheapest option anyway, because like all major hotel chains, Marriott also advertises with a “best price guarantee”. Not only are the prices flexible, but you also get a discount or points as compensation. More information about Marriott’s price offers and how you can take advantage of them can be found on the Marriott Bonvoy official website.

Time and again the company rolls out tons of bonus promotions with which you can easily fill up your Marriott points account faster. Sometimes in 2019, for instance, you could register for the Endless Earning Marriott Promotion. The offer included up to 1,500 bonus points for a stay of at least 2 nights. This was in addition to the regular points that you would have already collected depending on your status level.

If you’d like to top-up your points or you ever needed some additional points for a reward, you can simply buy Marriott bonus points on the Marriott Bonvoy website. Marriott Bonvoy points can be purchased in increments of 1,000 at a regular cost of USD 1.25 per point -- regardless of the purchase amount.

Of course, it would make a lot of sense to buy Marriott points at this price depending on your needs. However, we would generally advise that you wait for the periodic discount sales offer.

So far, 25% or 30% discounts have been offered in the past. In certain cases, the purchase price falls to 0.88 USD cents, which corresponds approximately to the average value of a Marriott Bonvoy point.

Generally, each member is eligible to purchase a maximum of 50,000 points within the calendar year. Any bonus offered is not included here.

Marriott Bonvoy points can also be collected indirectly with European American Express credit cards. Typically, American Express credit card holders are eligible to collect a Membership Reward point for every euro they spend (with the Membership Rewards Turbo of up to 1.5 points for every euro spent). These points can then be transferred to their Marriott Bonvoy Membership account in a ratio of 3 to 2. In effect, 1 Marriott point is collected for every 1 euro spent.

Do note that once the points have been transferred, a refund is not possible. Please visit the website for more details on how you can effectively convert your  Membership Rewards points into hotel points.

Marriott Bonvoy members can also earn Marriott points by planning events and booking groups in a participating hotel -- provided you book the events as a person and you are not a government organization employee. It is also important that your membership number is in the contractual agreement that you enter into with the Marriott Hotel and specified within every transaction.

If you meet these requirements, then rest assured that you will receive 2 points for every US dollar that you spend on up to 10 or more rooms, catering and other conference services.

You can also earn up to 60,000 Marriott base points per event can be collected in this way. This is particularly exciting when you consider the fact that there are a lot of brands that participate in this program.

Marriott Bonvoy status holders are also eligible to receive their respective bonuses based on the collected base points. Thus potentially increasing their maximum point yield per event as follows:

  • Silver Elite: 66,000 per qualifying event
  • Gold Elite: 75,000 per qualifying event
  • Platinum Elite: 90,000 per qualifying event
  • Titanium Elite: 105,000 per qualifying event
  • Ambassador Elite: 105,000 per qualifying event

Marriott Bonvoy has two ways of transferring points. A distinction is, however, made between Transferring Points and Gifting Points.

Transferring Points

A maximum of 100,000 points can be transferred to another member within the calendar year. Please note that there is an ‘ineligibility period’ (also known as the lock-up period) between the registration of the accounts and the first transfer of points.

This lock-up period is 30 days if either of the accounts have collected or redeemed points after registering. Nevertheless, if one of the two accounts has no activity within the first 30 days, the blocking period increases to 90 days. Only then can you transfer points within two member accounts.

An account can receive a maximum of 500,000 points from other accounts within the calendar year. This transaction must be authorized by the transferring member. And the membership number of the point recipient should be readily available.

Gifting Points

Marriott Bonvoy members can also give each other points. The marked difference between the point transfer option and the point gifting option is that the gifting member actively purchases the Marriott points in order to send them to another member. In this case, the gift member's points account remains unaffected. Each member can receive a maximum of 50,000 points within the calendar year as a gift.

Otherwise known as Vacations by Marriott. Marriott works with external partners to offer a booking platform for vacation trips. This platform is called Vacations by Marriott and offers customers vacation packages.

What makes Vacations by Marriott really special is the fact that you get Marriott points for your booking. The list of hotel services included in this trip is those hotels that belong in the Marriott Group. You also have the option to combine your bookings with a flight and/or a rental car.

Do note that bonuses in the form of Marriott points are offered for selected hotels and travel destinations. So you may want to make adequate findings to avoid any assumptions.

Your World Rewards with Emirate

Through active collaboration with Emirates, Marriott Bonvoy members with Gold Elite status and above have the rare opportunity to collect miles and points at the same time. If the flight is operated by Emirates, and the tariff entitles the member to earn miles, Gold status holders receive 3 points per US dollar that were spent on the flight tariff (excluding taxes and fees).

  • Tours & Activities

Marriott Bonvoy offers you its own portal to book tours, activities, and transfers… thus enabling you to qualify for the Marriott points. Everything from airport transfers, rentals and sporting events can be bought there.

  • Rental car

Marriott points can also be collected by booking with rental car partners. Some car rental services, for instance, offer up to 750 points for every car rental; 1,000 points for booking  their Limousine Service and 3 points for every trip with their driver.

  • Cruises

Marriott Bonvoy also works with cruise lines and those who book through cruise partners receive 3 Marriott points for every dollar spent. Do note, however, that Marriott has a dedicated cruise-with-points page for booking.

Marriott Bonvoy is in partnership with United Airlines' frequent flyer program, MileagePlus, which is known as RewardsPlus. So, if for instance, you are registered with both programs, you will earn more miles and receive other benefits such as more baggage allowance. United MileagePlus can also convert miles 1 to 1 into Marriott Bonvoy points. You are also eligible to transfer up to 50,000 miles of your RewardsPlus points to your Marriott Bonvoy account.

In addition, United miles can be bought at reduced prices during regular recurring promotions….

Do note that it would be a bad idea to only buy United miles and then convert them to Marriott points. Nevertheless, if you have bought United miles in the past and still have some points which you no longer have any use for. In this case, a conversion would be a far better idea than allowing the miles points to go into expiration -- in which case, you would lose its value altogether.

At the moment, Marriott cooperates with American Express in Germany. In this case, it is possible to convert Membership Rewards points, in a ratio of 3 to 2, into Marriott Bonvoy points (converting Membership Rewards points into hotel points).

Holders of German American Express Platinum credit card, however, stand the chance to benefit directly from the gold status in the Marriott Bonvoy program, which promises not only an increased collection rate but also numerous other advantages in the program.

Marriott Bonvoy offers its members the easiest and fastest way to collect Marriott Bonvoy points with hotel stays; bonus promotions, American Express credit cards, various transfer partners and the direct purchase of Marriott points and more!
